Mrs. Jolaiya is a medical laboratory scientist with a master’s degree in Medical Microbiology from the College of Medicine, University of Lagos. Her research experience spans over nine years in infectious bacterial pathogens, use of molecular diagnostic techniques in diagnosis, bacterial antimicrobial resistance mechanisms and study of pathogenesis in Helicobacter pylori. She had her pre-doctoral training at Max Von Pettenkofer Institute Munich, Germany, through Prof. S.I Smith’s DFG Grant between May 2017- October 2017 and she is currently rounding off her PhD. programme in Microbiology at the University of Lagos. Mrs. Jolaiya is currently a Laboratory Unit Head at the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board. She has been involved in several training and have been part of front line emergency response team in the 2014 Ebola and Lassa fever Outbreaks in Nigeria and more recently the COVID-19 pandemic. She has several peer reviewed published articles to her credit.

Professor Anthony Arigbabu was born on the 29th of November, 1938 and had his Primary School Education at St. Augustine Catholic School, Ijebu-Ode, where he was one of the pioneering student of the newly founded Ijebu Muslim College in 1950. After his West African School Certificate Examination (1st Set in 1955) he proceeded to Germany on 10th of April, 1958 to study Medicine at Georg August Universitaet Goettingen where he qualified in 1964. He did his residency at Medical School Hanover. He was board certified Surgeon and Traumatologist in 1972 and rose to position of First Oberarzt in 1974. He was appointed Senior Lecturer in 1975 as one of the 13 Nigerian pioneering lecturer Consultants to start the Medical School of Ife University Teaching Hospitals Complex, now Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital’s Complex. He was appointed foundation acting Head of Department of Surgery in 1976, Chairman Medical Advisory Committee and Director of Clinical Services; Training and Research between 1978 and 1982. Based on his clinical activities, he was sponsored by JICA to attend the 10th early Gastric Cancer Society Training Course in Tokyo for 6 months where he was exposed to extensive endoscopy, both upper and lower GIT. Arigbabu was promoted to the rank of Professor of Surgery in 1990 As active member of West African Society of Gastroenterology, He championed the gastrointestinal endoscopy in Nigeria throughout the country since 1978. By 1982, the first colonoscopy experience in Nigeria was presented by Prof. A. Arigbabu in a paper in Zaria in WASOG Conference. He became the Secretary General of WASOG in 1982 and subsequently President in 1997-2004. Dr. Abraham A. obtained a PhD. in Microbiology from the University of Lagos Nigeria. He is presently a researcher at the Molecular Biology and Biotechnology Department, Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (MBBT-NIMR). His research focus is on employing molecular techniques in investigating colonization and transmission of gut pathogens among humans and food animals, role of virulence determinants in pathogenesis and antibiotic resistance mechanisms. Dr. Yakhya Dieye obtained his PhD in Molecular Genetics from the University Paris-Sud, Orsay, France in 2002. After his PhD, Dr. Dieye held postdoctoral positions in the USA at the Ohio State University and at the Biodesign Institute, Arizona State University. Dr. Dieye worked also as a Senior Scientist at Ondek Pty Ltd an Australian start-up company founded by Nobel Prize winner Prof Barry Marshall from 2009 to 2013. Following this experience in the private sector, Dr. Dieye held a Visiting Senior Research Fellow position at the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 2013 to 2015. Dr. Dieye returned to his native country, Senegal in 2015 where he is a faculty at the Polytechnic School, University Cheikh Anta Diop, and the Head of the Pole of Microbiology at the Institut Pasteur de Dakar. Dr. Dieye’s main expertise is in bacterial genetics and molecular biology. He studied the expression of Salmonella virulence factors during infection using the mouse and the chicken as models. He has also worked on Helicobacter pylori studying the impact of infection by this bacterium on the composition and the dynamic of human gastric microbiota. The use of bacteria as delivery platform for oral vaccination is an active field of research. Dr. Dieye has worked on three types of vaccine platform on this topic including lactic acid bacteria (non-pathogenic platform), attenuated Salmonella (attenuated pathogen platform) and Helicobacter pylori (conditional pathogen with potential benefit to its host). In these studies Dr. Dieye worked on antigens from Mycobacterium tuberculosis, influenza virus and chicken’s Gumboro disease virus. Dr. Dieye’s current research interests include surveillance of bacterial infection and of antimicrobial resistance, genetic mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance, diarrheal and respiratory infections, and the impact of microbiota on infectious diseases. Gunturu, Revathi had her MBBS and MD from Osmania University, Hyderabad, AP India in 1976 and 1981 respectively. She obtained a Post Graduate Diploma from the University of Nairobi where she was trained on the management of STIs and HIV in 2003. She later had further training in infectious diseases from University of Alberta, Canada, South Tees / James Cook University UK and Newcastle University Australia in 2009, 2011 and 2013 respectively. Prof. Gunturu, Revathi is a clinical microbiology and infectious diseases specialist with special interest in Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance among various pathogens, including tuberculosis. Her expertise includes diagnostic microbiology and quality control systems for clinical diagnostic microbiology. As the Head of Microbiology, she have been instrumental in driving the microbiology section to international accreditation by College of American Pathologists (CAP) and establishing the post graduate programs in her institution. Her hospital is JCIA accredited and well recognized for robust post graduate medical education programs. Her research interests include bacterial AMR, Salmonellosis, tuberculosis and hospital acquired infections among others. She have been deeply engaged in clinical and diagnostic work, teaching and training all cadres of health care personnel. Gunturu, Revathi was Senior Research Office and Senior lecturer at the Cytology Research Centre, Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi, India between 1986 – 1988 and 1988 – 1991. She was a reader in the Clinical Microbiology Department, University College of Medical Sciences, GTB Hospital, New Delhi, India (1991 – 1997) and Chief Medical Specialist, Consultant Microbiologist and head of the Department of Laboratory Medicine, Kenyatta National Hospital and College of Health Sciences, University of Nairobi 1997 – 2006. She is currently the Head of Clinical Microbiology, Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, Kenya. She is engaged in ground breaking research in Helicobacter pylori in collaboration with renowned scientists including Prof Varocha Mahachai of Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, Prof. P. Malfertheiner, of Otto-von-Guericke University, Magdeburg, Germany and Prof Yoshio Yamaoka of Oita University in Japan. Prof. Gunturu, Revathi is member to several professional bodies including ISID, ESCMID, ICAN, APECSA, IPNET Kenya and ERS. She is a recipient of several grants and awards and have a large number of publications to her credit.

She is a founding fellow of the East, Central, and Southern African College of Physicians, and current president of the Zambia College of Gastroenterology and Nutrition. She is a member of the American Association for Cancer Research, the World Endoscopy Organisation, the African Organization for Research and Training in Cancer, the African Forum for Research and Education in Health, the Consortium of Universities for Global Health and the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World. Professor Naima LAHBABI-AMRANI was elected as the 2019-2021 President of the World Gastroenterology Organisation (WGO) by the General Assembly during the World Congress of Gastroenterology in Istanbul, Turkey on 23 September 2019. Professor Lahbabi-Amrani is the first woman to hold this position and also the first President from Africa and Middle East.
Professor Lahbabi-Amrani is a Professor of Medicine at the University Mohammed V, Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy in Rabat, Morocco. She is also the Director of the WGO Rabat Training Center, one of WGO’s oldest Training Centers.
Professor Lahbabi-Amrani is an Honorary President of the Pan-Arab Association of Gastroenterology. She is a Governing Council member of AMAGE (African-Middle Eastern Association of Gastroenterology); a Governing Council member of the Pan-Arab Society of Gastroenterology; and a Governing Council member of the Moroccan Society of Gastroenterology. She is a Founding Member of the AAFFCHGE, which since November 2017, is now the SAHGE (Société Africaine d’Hépato-Gastro-entérologie et d’Endoscopie digestive). She is member of numerous gastroenterology societies and associations. Professor Lahbabi-Amrani serves as a hepatologist and gastroenterologist. She graduated from Paris VII Medical University. She holds a master’s degree in Human Biology with a focus on Physiology and Functional Digestive Exploration from Claude Bernard University-Lyon, France. She has served as Head of the Hepato-Gastroenterology Department at CHU Ibn Sina-Rabat; the Associate Dean of Research and cooperation at the Rabat Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy; President of the Moroccan Society of Gastroenterology (SMMAD); and President of the Pan-Arab Association of Gastroenterology. She was an Executive Member of ASNEMGE which has since become UEG. Prof. Lahbabi-Amrani has served on both the WGO Governing Council and WGO Executive Committee as Scientific Program Committee Chair (2009-2015); Secretary General (2015-2017); WGOF Chair (2017-2019) and President-elect (2017-2019). She has additionally, served on several WGO committees as Member of the Training Centers Committee (2001-present); Member of the Train the Trainers Committee (2013-2019); Member of the Finance Committee (2015-2019); Member of the Nominations Committee (2009-2013); and Member of the WDHD Committee (2012 and 2018-Present). Distinctions and Awards She is an Honorary Member for rendered services to AAFFCHGE (Association d’Afrique Francophone de Formation Continue en Hépato-Gastroentérologie. Roland Ndip is a Professor of Microbiology and current Dean of the Faculty of Science, University of Buea, Cameroon, after serving as Registrar of the same University from 2014 to 2019. Biomedical research at the University of Buea and academic exchange with other institutions in Africa and overseas are strongly encouraged by Prof. Roland. However, as in much of Africa, it is often constrained by limited research funds. He has a long standing interest and active research programmes in infectious disease, and in the utility of both Western and Traditional (herbal) medicines for treatment of infection and disease. His research focuses on three thematic areas of relevance in low and middle income countries, notably: Resistance and virulence determinants of bacterial pathogens (with a bias in Helicobacter pylori) from humans and animal food samples; Co-infection and Epidemiology of Viral Infections; Alternative and Complementary Medicine. Prof. Roland studied at premier institutions in Nigeria (BSc, MSc, PhD in Medical Microbiology) with specializations in pathogenic and molecular microbiology, and have extended his training through participation in short courses and laboratory visits abroad, for example, as a postdoctoral fellow, in the Department of Child Health, University of Glasgow (molecular and immunologic diagnostic methods for Helicobacter pylori) and the German Research Centre for Biotechnology, Braunschweig, Germany for molecular characterisation of Salmonella Typhi. He started His academic career in 1993, at the Edo State University, Ekpoma, Nigeria and later moved to the University of Buea, Cameroon in 1995, and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2004. He joined the services of the University of Fort Hare, South Africa, in 2007, and was promoted to full Professor in 2009; He then returned to the University of Buea in 2013. In his over 25 years as an academic, he has won numerous scholarships, fellowships and research grants, amongst others, the UNESCO, National Institutes of Health (USA), The Commonwealth, The International Foundation for Science, The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), The Association of African Universities, the Wellcome Trust, and the National Research Foundation of South Africa, to conduct research, attend international conferences, workshops, short courses/research visits and deliver lectures. Prof. Roland belong to several academic and professional societies, have supervised/co-supervised over 100 undergraduate, 75 Master’s, 13 PhD students’ and 2 Postdoctoral fellows work and published over 125 articles in peer reviewed journals including 3 book chapters.

Professor Onyekwere C. A. ((FACP, FMCP, MD, AGAF, FASGE, MBBS)) is a medical graduate of University of Nigeria College of Medicine, where he obtained his basic medical degree and proceeded to University of Lagos teaching hospital where he underwent his residency training in internal Medicine with sub specialization in Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
He has had training fellowship in advanced endoscopy overseas at University of Magdeburg Clinic Germany and Theodore Bilharz Research Institute Cairo, Egypt. He has been a lecturer at the Lagos State University College of medicine where he has risen to a Professor and also serves as consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist as well as Chief of Endoscopy to the Lagos state University teaching hospital where he had previously served as head of department of Medicine.
He is a member of the Faculty board of internal Medicine, National postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and also Chair of the subspecialty of Gastroenterology. He has served as an examiner in all its level of examination; as well as external examiner to all number medical schools (including Obafemi Awolowo University Ife, university of Lagos and University of Nigeria) final MBBS exams His research has focused on the discipline of gastroenterology and hepatology which is a major contributor to morbidity and mortality worldwide and in the Nigerian population in particular due to the high prevalence of viral hepatitis. He has tried to document the magnitude of this problem and its attendant complications including liver failure and cancer in prospective inpatient and outpatient study in the general as well as special populations including immunosuppressed (diabetics, lymphoma patients) and noting their correlates. His work has focused also on some of the barriers in the management of these conditions including knowledge and attitude of the populace, physicians’ perspectives as well as uptake of certain innovative care like liver replacement therapy. Equally he has investigated the efficacy of newer medications in the management of these conditions as well as other contributory conditions of liver related morbidity like non-alcoholic liver disease. Gastrointestinal disorders including gastroesophageal reflux disease and malignancies (esophageal, stomach, pancreas and colorectal) are other important contributors to morbidity and mortality in our setting. He has studied the impact of these conditions, noting some of the etiological factors e.g. H pylori and other correlates; findings that could provide evidence base in formulation of guideline for preventions, early diagnosis and treatment of these various cancers. Currently he is involved in international collaborative studies on functional GIT disorders and gut microbes as dysbiosis has been thought to be at the root of certain disorders like obesity, inflammatory bowel disease, diabetes mellitus and hypertension

Otegbayo graduated MBBS in 1989 from the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, underwent residency training in Internal Medicine at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, and obtained the Fellowship of the West African College of Physicians in 1998. He subsequently obtained a Postgraduate Certificate in Gastroenterology at the University of Tel-Aviv, Israel in 2002. He further, obtained M.Sc. and PhD. in Chemical Pathology/Immunology at the University of Ibadan in 2003 and 2011 respectively. In 2009, he was awarded the Fellowship of the American College of Gastroenterology and the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians, Glasgow, in 2015. He has taught and supervised both undergraduate and postgraduate students to the Fellowship levels at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Ladoke Akintola University, Osogbo, University of Nigerian Teaching Hospital, Enugu, Babcock University/Babcock University Teaching Hospital, Ilisan, University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Port Harcourt, University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Lagos and Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Lagos. He has been an examiner in Nigeria and Ghana to the West African College of Physicians since 2005 and belongs to several local and international professional associations. His clinical and research interests are in liver and gastrointestinal diseases, particularly viral hepatitis, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. He has presented many academic papers at local, sub-regional and international conferences, and has over ninety scholarly publications to his credit in both local and international journals. He was the maiden Editor-in-Chief of the Nigerian Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Member Editorial Board of the World Journal of Gastroenterology. Prof. Mashiko Setshedi MBChB (UKZN), FCP (CMSA), Certificate of Gastroenterology (CMSA), MPH (UCT), PhD (UCT), FRCP (Edin) joined the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 2005 initially as a clinical research fellow, and subsequently as a gastroenterology registrar.
During her doctoral studies between 2009 and 2011 she was at Brown University where she studied signalling impairments in alcohol and hepatitis-B related liver disease. Upon her return to UCT in 2011 she worked as a specialist consultant and educator in the Department of Medicine, building a large teaching portfolio mainly at undergraduate but also post-graduate level. In the undergraduate programme she has served as a convenor, tutor and examiner in both the departments of Medicine and Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. In 2015 she was awarded the Oxford Nuffield Medical Scholarship and spent 2.5 years at Oxford University on a post-doctoral fellowship. She returned in May 2018

Prof. Stella Ifeanyi SMITH holds a PhD in Medical Microbiology from the College of Medicine, University of Lagos with special interest in Molecular epidemiology, microbiome and antimicrobial resistance of infectious diseases such as Helicobacter pylori, Salmonella spp, Campylobacter jejuni and C. coli and Enterohaemorraghic E. coli 0157:H7. She is a Director of Research, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Nigerian Institute of Medical Research and Professor of Microbiology at the Mountain Top University, Ogun State. Her lab is one of the main labs in Nigeria where actual culture and diagnosis of H. pylori is done for improvement of diagnosis and treatment of this pathogen. She is the only African H. pylori Consultant in the Maastricht VI project, a European consortium from 29 countries. She is also the Convener of the African Helicobacter and Microbiota Study Group. Prof. Smith had her pre-doctoral training with an European Union scholarship, (EU) in Manchester, UK from 1993-1994, with her PhD programme fully paid for by the EU scholarship. She had her post-doctoral training at the Technical University Hospital, Dresden, Germany with an Alexander von Humboldt (AvH) Fellowship between 1999- 2000. INSERM Fellowship at the Laboratoire de Bacteriologie, Universite from May – July 2001 and then a return Humboldt Fellowship at the Max von Pettenkoffer Institut, München from April–September 2003. Prof. Smith is a reviewer to several national and international journals and a member and reviewer of the African German Network of Excellence in Science (AGNES). Prof. Smith was listed under the 19th Edition of ‘Who is Who in the World’ in 2001 She has been listed under the ‘List of 10 Nigerian women pulling their weight in Science’ by Leadership newspaper, 2017 as well as ‘List of 16 Prominent Nigerian women that excelled in Science and Research,’ silverbirdtv.com 2018. Prof. Smith is a member of the National Technical Working Group on AMR Research in Nigeria. She is a member of 13 learned Societies and external examiner for MSc, PhD thesis in Nigeria and South Africa. She has won ten research grants, four equipment grants, two book awards and one award for hosting an international conference. She has been involved in several capacity building as well as infrastructure development and has organized several molecular biology hands-on-training workshops since 2009 with 350+ participants in attendance. She has co-supervised fifteen PhD students (four on-going) and seventeen MSc students and several BSc students some of whom she was direct supervisor. She has 174 peer-reviewed publications and two book chapters. She has over 50 attendances at both international and national conferences. Dr. Evariste Tshibangu-Kabamba (PhD, MD, DTM&H) holds a Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Sciences and a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from the University of Mbujimayi, DRC. He did his residency in general internal medicine in the same institution and had clinical training in advanced gastrointestinal endoscopy techniques in the management of early gastric cancer from Oita University Hospital and Fukuoka University Chikushi Hospital Japan. He had his Ph.D. in Medical Sciences from Oita University and a professional degree in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (DTM&H) from Nagasaki University Japan. Dr. Evariste committed to local capacity building in molecular surveillance of pathogens and outbreaks preparedness in the Province of Kasai. This is a landlocked region within the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) which is a biodiversity hotspot where pathogens can emerge or persist under the radar of health policies due to very limited access to laboratory technologies. This he plans to achieve by working as an Internal Medicine Physician while teaching students and, above all, conducting research. He is currently setting up a local team and wider collaborations to trigger convergent infectious threats (e.g. SARS-CoV-2, Monkeypox virus, drug-resistant malaria, multi-drug resistant bacteria) through a combination of on-site metagenomics, serological explorations, and epidemiological modeling surveys. Along with emerging infectious diseases, Dr. Evariste also conducts research aimed at applying (developing) laboratory techniques to profile molecular aspects of H. pylori infection, antimicrobial stewardship, and gut microbiome in relation to the risk of gastrointestinal cancers (mainly, gastric cancer) in the African setting.

Dr. Rose Ashinedu Ugiagbe (MB; BS, FMCP, MD) obtained her basic medical degree from the University of Benin Medical School in the year 2000. She had her residency training at the University of Benin Teaching HospitaL, and obtained a Fellowship of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in the Faculty of Internal Medicine with sub-specialization in Gastroenterology and Hepatology, in 2010. She was awarded the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in 2022. She is presently an Associate Professor with the University of Benin and Honorary Consultant with the University of Benin Teaching Hospital. She is also the current Head of Department of Family Medicine, University of Benin and Treasurer of the Society for Gastroenterology and Hepatology in Nigeria (SOGHIN). She is the Co-ordinator/Director of Research, African Centre of Excellence in Reproductive Health Initiative (CERHI).
She has served as both internal and external examiner in Medical Students training. Her clinical and research interests are in liver, gastrointestinal and tropical diseases. She has served as a reviewer of many Journal articles as well as supervised several postgraduate dissertations. She is also a postgraduate Examiner with the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. At the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, she was the Principal Investigator of the international HALT-IT Trial and has been involved in several other collaborative studies. She belongs to many professional bodies and she is a member of the reviewers’ committee of SOGHIN for hepatitis management guidelines.
